Self-referral

 

A self-referral can be used when you are in an emergency where you have no immediate finances to buy pet food, and without the service your pets will go without food. You will receive a pet food parcel to cover up to 10 days to help you with topping up what you currently purchase. What you need will be discussed.

 

This type of referral can only be used a maximum of 4 times in 12 months and we suggest you make a professional referral if you require longer term help. Each time you self refer you have to complete the form at the bottom of the page.

 

Examples of requiring a self-referral are:

 

  • A sudden change in benefits

  • An unexpected delay in benefits

  • Sudden homelessness

  • Fleeing domestic abuse

  • Unexpected vet bills and you are on a low income

  • Unexpected large household bill and you are on a low income

  • Positive COVID test and no support network

You must also live within Pembrokeshire or Carmarthenshire.

Important information – please read

 

  1. The pet food bank service is only open Wednesday to Friday each week, you can however email via the website outside of these times.  If it is an emergency outside of these opening times, please state the word EMERGENCY in your email subject box and we will respond as soon as we can.  Our email is cariadpetfoodbank@gmail.com and the only contact number for the pet food bank is 07435 881 300.  We are located at Cariad Pet Food Bank, 113 City Road, Haverfordwest SA61 2RR.

  2. We will try to match you pet food requirements to the needs of your pets where possible, but we cannot guarantee meeting specific dietary requirements such as grain free or fish only.  We can only offer what we have had donated as we are donation based.  We tend to support dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits and ferrets as a guide.  Sometimes we have fish, bird, and chicken food.

  3. We promote responsible pet ownership so we are not there to supplement new additions in puppies and kittens if you are struggling to feed your current pets, please think carefully before you take on any more.

  4. If you are in Pembrokeshire, we can only deliver to you if you have no means of collecting from the pet food bank yourself, or by help from family and friends.  Please be aware our funds for mileage are limited.  This does not apply to Carmarthenshire based deliveries where we do not expect you to collect from our pet food bank in Haverfordwest as we will always deliver fortnightly.

  5. We are no longer going to leave donations on the doorstep or in an external box if you are not at home.  We expect to be greeted at the doorstep so our delivery volunteer can ensure that the pet food has been received by you.  This is also to ensure that pet food does not get damaged by rain, stolen and that we can check in to see that all is ok.  If you are immobile and cannot get up to the door, please let us know this in advance.

  6. Our delivery times cannot be specified to the minute, and we will give you an estimate of delivery time based on the delivery route that day.

  7. Please be aware that we are all volunteers giving up our time to help the community, we do have a procedure in place for you to apply to use the service, so please only go through the correct channels as listed on our website.  Any contact with our volunteers outside of their pet food bank duty regarding pet food bank matters is not allowed. 

  8. In any rare circumstance that our volunteers are abused whilst carrying out their duties, this may lead to you no longer being able to use the service, this also applies to any defamatory social media comments. Any incident that we feel is of a threatening or abusive nature will be reported to the police.
